Margin of Error Calculator

Any poll that surveys a sample of a population, rather than the entire population, has an inherent margin of error. This calculator determines that theoretical margin based on your specific parameters, giving you the “plus or minus” range for your data at the standard 95% confidence level.

Margin of Error Calculator

How to Use

  • Population Size: Enter the total number of people in the group you are studying (e.g., the total number of registered voters in your district).
  • Sample Size: Enter the number of respondents who completed your survey.
  • Click “Calculate” to see your margin of error percentage.

Why It Matters in Research

In polling, precision is everything.  If a poll shows 51% support for an issue with a ±4% margin of error, actual support could be anywhere from 47% to 55%.  Understanding this range is critical for strategy.  It prevents campaigns from overreacting to minor ticks in data that are actually just statistical noise rather than genuine shifts in sentiment.
